an open letter to Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind

Dear Stephan,

My name is Rod Blackhurst and I am a 25 year old filmmaker.

I first heard your band in the early winter of 1997, maybe even in December of 1996. Where have you gone Stephan? From your lyrics to your music to your melodies to your harmonies to your branding guitar harmonics where have you gone? Your three albums hold me together still to this day. In fact I can’t stop listening to Out of the Vein. The analog sound that makes the basses and drums deep and rich just makes things feel right.

I worked in the music industry for a while in college, Aware Records, Atlantic Records, spent some time booking shows for my college, John Mayer, Riddlin Kids, Lucky Boys Confusion, The Push Stars, and I’ve directed music videos.

Yeah, some of my friends in bands that had their haydays back in the late 90’s early 2000’s don’t like you. I’m not going to name them but their bands were big, and I’ve been fortunate enough to keep in touch with them, building lasting relationships. But that doesn’t matter to me. I saw Third Eye Blind play about 4 or 5 times and when I lived in Lake Tahoe for the past three years I wish that I could have seen a show in San Francisco but alas I was never able to catch your band at the right time.

So I’m writing this letter to you for two reasons.

1. I want you to make music again. I know that you are recording with your girlfriend but I look forward to the day when I can buy another third eye blind CD.

2. I want to offer my filmmaking services to you and your band. You can check out a bunch of my work at www.transistorproductions.com, music videos, documentary projects, and X-Games film work that I’ve done. I would like to make your story into a film, and I guess it doesn’t need any boundaries, just you and your band recording, getting ready to make new music. I’ll shoot the behind the scenes. I’ll help you concept a good music video, something that is just music and you all.

3. I have no idea how to get in touch with you so this is my open letter to you.

I’m waiting to get into NYU film school right now, should know by April 1st. I had an interview there a few weeks ago which is a big thing. I’m writing a short screenplay with a friend who lives in San Francisco. We are planning on shooting it this summer and it’s the story of a group of friends, but mainly the story of a man who’s life is just a series of fuckups. He’s scared that his life will never amount to anything, that maybe he’s just eloquent in his own head.

Sometimes I feel this way myself, maybe we all do at times.

Much respect,

Rod Blackhurst
